A collection of groundwater cyclopid copepods from the West Indian islands has been studied. Twenty species or subspecies are identified, and taxonomic and zoogeographic remarks on some rare or poorly known taxa are made. Seven new taxa, viz. Neocyclops stocki n. sp., Metacyclops (Metacyclops) botosaneanui n. sp., Metacyclops (Metacyclops) dianae n. sp., Metacyclops (Apocyclops) stocki n. sp., Mesocyclops intermedius n. sp., Mesocyclops aequatorialis americanus n. ssp., and Thermocyclops tenuis longifurcatus n. ssp. are described. In general, the cyclopid fauna of the West Indian islands is much more closely related to the South and Central American fauna than to the fauna of North America. On the other hand, some species in the present collection, such as... |

The stygobiont gammarids of Haiti are more diversified than anywhere else in the world: not less than 13 species (all new) in 7 genera (5 new) and 4 subgenera (all new) are described of a somewhat loosely delimited group called the hadzioids/weckelioids. Practically all species have limited ranges within Haiti, whose stream systems apparently have acquired a great deal of isolation. The morphology of these amphipods makes even more indefinable the various supra-generic units proposed in the last 10 years for the “Gammaridae s.l.” |

This paper is a retrospective analysis of the effects of Somalia's price policies for maize and sorghum between 1971 and 1983. Maize and sorghum are the two most important dietary staple foods and represent over 96 percent of the cereal production of the country. Since the early 1970's, the government has pursued an economic policy framework which emphasized the public sector and parastatals were given a prominent role in agricultural production and marketing activities. Private trade in maize and sorghum was banned during this period, and a government agency took over the grain marketing and distribution activities in the country. Despite the government's goals to increase cereal production, maize and sorghum output stagnated during the period and... |

A survey of agricultural banks in New York State found that inability to compete with the low interest rates offered by the Farm Credit Service (FCS) rather than the unavailability of funds per se was limiting agricultural lending by commercial banks. A MASI-like intermediary would (1) be of assistance only to banks unable to use loan participations and with high CD costs and (2) would likely require a large multistate area to be feasible. Only eight percent of the New York banks serving agriculture qualify for FICB funding. Further, FICB funding would be profitable only if banks experienced illiquidity at least 50 percent of the time. |

Starting point of the present study on Harpullia was the taxonomic revision of that genus by Leenhouts & Vente (Blumea 28, 1982, 1-51). The system to which that revision led is primarily intuitive and accordingly subjective. The intention of the present paper is to give a more natural system based upon more objective criteria and with the use of more scientific methods. The fundamentals of a systematic study are species and characters (see chapter 2). The species are those presented in the taxonomic revision; the characters used are tabulated in the form of a synoptic key (see chapter 2 B). In chapter 3 a survey is given of two intuitive systems, the one by Leenhouts & Vente and the preceding one by Radlkofer (1933-34). The first approach was... |

This paper develops an economic model of the New England groundfish market. A multi-sector, multi-level econometric model is estimated using data from 1970 to 1982. The parameters of the estimated model are used to characterize consumer demand for groundfish and related products. Retail and exvessel demands for fresh and frozen groundfish fillets are found to be highly elastic. Fresh fillets especially show high income elasticity of demand, reflecting their status as a luxury good. Only a very small and statistically weak relationship was found between the prices of imported groundfish and domestic exvessel prices indicating that proposals to assist the domestic industry via tariffs may be ineffectual. |

An interregional reactive programming model of the United States dairy industry is used to test the welfare implications of several dairy program changes on milk producers, milk consumers, and taxpayers. The results showed that each of the tested alternatives (price support reduction, price support reduction with frozen minimum Class I price, assessments, and production quotas) could reduce price support expenditures substantially. However, assessments reduced expenditures most effectively in terms of cost to milk producers for the United States generally while the price support reduction with frozen minimum Class I price was most efficacious in terms of cost to Southeast producers. |

Dissolved salts (salinity) adversely affect numerous urban and agricultural users of Colorado River water in California and Arizona. Congress in 1974 authorized a major salinity control program. Studies of general economic benefits from salinity abatement and the cost per unit of salinity reduction expected from specific proposed projects have been developed by the responsible federal agencies, but no project-by-project evaluation has been published. We find a conceptual basis for a substantial downward revision of prospective economic benefits of salinity abatement. Revised benefits are compared with estimated costs, and only for five of the nineteen projects do economic benefits appear to exceed costs. |

Principal component analysis in employed to develop indices that distinguish between participants and nonparticipants in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. Results of incorporating these indices into yield, net return, and production cost functions for cotton producers indicate that both yield and costs increase as the degree of producer participation in IPM increases. Although these results are inconsistent with previous research, they are consistent with the theoretical relationship between IPM and conventional input usage. |
